Cookie Policy
Last updated: 16 June 2026
This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, which cookies are used on Punterail (accessible at Punterail), why each one exists, how long each one persists, and how you can control or remove them.
This policy should be read together with our Privacy Policy. Together they set out the full picture of how we handle information on the Site.
What a Cookie Is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to save on your device when you visit. On a later visit, the browser can return the contents of that file to the same website. Cookies allow the site to remember things between pages — for example, whether you have already accepted a consent banner, or whether an analytics script has already recorded the session. Cookies cannot read other files on your device and cannot run programs.
Related technologies work in a similar way: local storage, session storage, and pixel tags. Everything described in this policy covers those related technologies as well, even where we use the word “cookie” for convenience.
Categories of Cookies We May Use
Strictly necessary cookies. These enable core functionality of the Site, such as load-balancing, security, and remembering your cookie-consent preferences themselves. Without these cookies the Site does not function correctly. They are set on a first-party basis from the Punterail domain and typically expire at the end of your browsing session or within a short window measured in days.
Performance and analytics cookies. These help us understand how readers use the Site at an aggregate level — which articles are read, how long visitors spend on a page, which routes into the Site are most common. We use this information to plan coverage and to identify articles that need to be updated. Analytics identifiers are not used to target you with advertising. Persistence of analytics cookies varies by provider and is typically measured in months rather than years.
Functionality cookies. These remember non-essential preferences that make the Site nicer to use, such as text-size choices or a dismissed information banner. They are first-party and typically persist for the duration of the visit or a limited follow-up window.
Punterail does not run advertising on the Site. We do not set advertising or retargeting cookies. We do not sell cookie-derived data to operators or advertisers.
Third Parties
Some cookies are set by third-party services we use to run the Site, such as content-delivery networks, fonts services, and analytics. When a third-party cookie is present, it is placed by that third party under its own privacy and cookie policies. We review these providers periodically and select providers whose practices are consistent with Australian Privacy Principles and the position taken in our own Privacy Policy.
Your Consent
Where we use cookies that are not strictly necessary, we ask for your consent before those cookies are set. You can grant, withdraw, or change your consent at any time via the cookie consent mechanism on the Site. Withdrawing consent does not retroactively remove cookies that were set while consent was active — you will need to clear those from your browser directly (see the next section).
How to Manage Cookies in Your Browser
All modern browsers let you view cookies currently stored, delete specific cookies or all cookies, block cookies from new sites, and block third-party cookies as a general rule. Settings are found in the privacy or security section of your browser’s settings menu. The exact path differs between Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge, and mobile browsers. Blocking or deleting cookies can break functionality on this Site and on many other sites you visit.
You can also set your browser to send a “Do Not Track” signal or to use privacy-focused modes that block most non-essential cookies by default. We honour these signals where technically possible.
Mobile Device Controls
On a mobile device, browser cookies are controlled the same way as on a desktop. If you use an in-app browser — for example when you tap a link inside a social app — the app controls its own cookies separately. Consult the app’s help documentation for details.
Children
The Site is directed at adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly set cookies on devices used by minors, but cookies are not a reliable indicator of the user’s age. If you are a parent or guardian and you believe a minor has been using the Site, you can clear cookies on that device via the browser settings described above.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in the cookies we use or the regulatory environment. Revisions are published on this page with a new “last updated” date at the top. Continued use of the Site after a revision indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
